President’s Message

Leadership Changes Are Happening Within Our Board
We are excited to announce some changes within our board and want to share the news with you!

Our Vice President, Kathleen Kane has resigned her position as Vice President effective March 1, 2024. Kathleen has done a wonderful job serving as our Education Action Team Leader and kept us informed and active with Duval County School Board meetings and workshops and legislation in Tallahassee.  We appreciate her service as our Vice President and are excited and honored that she will remain on the board in a different role. She will be serving as an appointed board member and will continue to coordinate and plan our informative monthly Lunch with the League events at Seasons 52.  Her liaison with the Seasons 52 staff has allowed us to bring relevant speakers to our members to keep us informed and engaged in matters that impact us locally but also across the state.
Rhona DiCamillo has been appointed by the Board to serve out the remainder of the vacant Vice President's term (June 2025) and has already been delving into the role and responsibilities of League leadership.  We look forward to continuing our work with Kathleen and Rhona in the months to come.   The transition of these two Board members will be seamless to our members and will not interrupt our work.

The work of the League does not happen without our members or those who are willing to serve on our Board so we are grateful to these two League leaders. As President, I look forward to working with them in the very busy months to come.

Lanelle Phillmon, President
LWV/JFC

News & Events

Join us for lunch at Seasons 52 on March 6th, for our First Wednesday Lunch with the League.

In honor of Women's History Month, Dr. Mary Gatta, Co-Public Policy Director for the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Florida will be our expert speaker. Mary will talk about the Equal Rights Amendment and Equal Pay Day in Northeast Florida.

Doors open at 11:20 and lunch will begin at 11:45, followed by the program.

The menu includes a small Field Greens Salad, choice of entree (Chicken Caprese Sandwich, Avocado Toast, or Crab Cake Sandwich), a Mini Indulgence Dessert and beverage (Coffee, Iced Tea, or Soft Drink), at a cost per person of $35.00 for members and their guests. Non-members who purchase tickets will pay an additional $2.00 Technology Convenience fee, for a total of $37.00.

Registration will close on March 3rd, and tickets will not be available at the door.  Seating is limited so register early!

Board of Directors – Open Positions for our June Annual Meeting
The Nominating Committee is seeking members to fill the following positions on the Board beginning in June 2024.

Director – Voter Registration: Rhona DiCamillo will not be seeking reelection as Voter Registration Director as she will be fulfilling the remainder of the Vice President's term (til June 2025). She has been a very active and organized Voter Registration Director and has created a tracking and communications system that will allow another League member to step into this role.   If one League member is not comfortable filling this role, our bylaws allow for Co-Officers, which would allow two members to work together in the leadership of our Voter Registration Committee. Voter registration is such a vital part of the League’s work.  This is a two year term.

Nominating Committee Members (three members): This committee works to identify candidates for Board positions that will be voted on by the members at the annual business meeting.  This is a great way to learn more about the League and meet our members while working to ensure the future leadership of our League.  This is a one year term.

If you are interested in being considered for Voter Registration Director or Nominating Committee member, contact any of current the Nominating Committee members with your interest by March 15th:

Seeking Volunteers for VOTE411
The League of Women Voters Education Fund produces an online voter guide, VOTE411.org, for federal and state races, judicial retention races, and local races and ballot measures for Clay, Duval, Nassau, and St. Johns counties. If you are interested in helping with setting up the voter guide for the 2024 election cycle, please contact Deb Miller, debunf@gmail.com. We need folks to do all or some of the following: gathering race information, drafting questions for candidates, making phone calls, working with GIS maps for voting districts, and preparing announcements and social media posts about the resource. The work will start in early 2024.

International womens day 2024

Volunteers Needed for International Women's Day Event
We are excited to join Together Jax to celebrate International Women's Day on March 9th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at Mt Olive Primitive Baptist Church at 1319 N. Myrtle Avenue.  Together Jax has created an opportuntiy to connect with the community in a meaningful way and show through action that we understand their needs, and that we genuinely work on behalf of the people. We show that we care about more than just their vote. We work to preserve democracy and to bring about positive change that improves the quality of life for all.

The International Women’s Day Celebration is being held in an area designated by the Duval Health Department as Health Zone 1 (HZ1). Residents in HZ1 have the lowest economic income, and worst health care outcomes in the county. This event is designed to bring health care services to them and engage them in the civic process.

The League has an opportunity to participate in this event by tabling but also volunteering. If you would like to volunteer in any of the below listed ways, contact Bonnie Hendrix, President of Together Jax at BonnieJax14@gmail.com.

LOOKING FOR A LITTLE COMEDY DURING ELECTION SEASON?  COME OUT FOR POTUS!
The 5 & Dime Theatre Company, an organization that has been telling compelling stories in Jacksonville for 11 years, will be producing a hilarious political comedy about a potty-mouthed President and the brilliant women that try to keep him out of trouble. It is playing from March 15 – 23 at The Florida Ballet.  The League will be hosting a Voter Registration and engagement table at the March 18th showing and some of our hardworking volunteers will be attending for free.

We hope that you will check out the show, attend one of their performances, and if you are there on March 18th, stop by to say hello to fellow League members.
