President’s Message

International Women's Day

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.  The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.  International Women's Day has occurred for well over a century, with the first being recognized in 1911.  It is not relegated to a specific country, group, political ideology, or organization.

This year's theme is "Embrace Equity".  One of the earliest examples of equity is found in Medieval England, when English courts settled disputes according to Common Law. Justice was uniform and consistent, but not necessarily fair. For example, if two people both commit theft, but the stolen items have different value, should they receive the same punishment? Since then, Courts have adopted the principle of equity, taking a case-by-case approach to consider differing circumstances.

In political terms, equality is one of the foundations of democracy. Equality is based on the belief that all people should have the same opportunities for a happy life. Equity is linked to the ideal that success is based on personal efforts and not social status.  While much of the historical work towards women's issues has been focused on equality, perhaps we should look towards equity as a better principle to progress our society. Equity acknowledges that people don't begin life in the same place, and that circumstances can make it more difficult for people to achieve the same goals.

Inequity affects many people, but most commonly historically it has marginalized communities such as women, people of color, people with disabilities, the economically disadvantaged, and those from the LGBTQ+ community.  The goal of equity is to change systemic and structural barriers that get in the way of people's ability to thrive.  People who push for equality-based solutions to social issues may believe in impartiality, and that there should be no difference in services and policies.

However, equity-based solutions take into account the diverse lived experiences of individuals and communities, adapting services and policies according to these differences.

Equity is a long-term and sustainable solution, and is a process for addressing imbalanced social systems.  Equality focuses on providing all genders with equal opportunities, such as a woman's right to vote. Yet, women often require more than a level playing field. They need to belong in a global culture that actively promotes and supports them in all aspects of their life, from education to the workplace to health.

Gender is intersectional, and women as a group are truly diverse. Policies that benefit white women, for example, may not benefit women of color due to historical or current inequalities. A shift from gender equality to the process of gender equity is required for meaningful progress.

I hope you will make it part of your daily life and work to educate friends, family, colleagues, and the community on the need for equity.  If we are truly to create an equal and inclusive world, we will need to understand the difference between equity and equality whether it is in our home, work, school, community, government institutions, or business environment.

Visit International Women's Day for more ways to engage in equity work in your community.

Lanelle Phillmon, LWVJFC President

It's Coming Up! The Mayoral Candidate Meet and Greet

Be sure to mark your calendars for Sunday, March 12, from 2- 4 in the afternoon for the LWVJFC Mayoral Candidate Meet and Greet with the candidates for Jacksonville Mayor in the upcoming election. So far, we have received confirmation from 6 of the 8 candidates that they will attend.  Please bring friends and family so that we can have a great kickoff to our in-person candidate events. We will hear briefly from each candidate and then you will have the opportunity to speak with each one personally to discuss your hopes and concerns for Jacksonville.  This event is open to the public.

Volunteers Needed for the Mayoral Candidate Meet and Greet

The LWVJFC is sponsoring a Mayoral Candidate Meet and Greet onMarch 12th. Eight volunteers are needed,1:30 pm to 4:00 pm, the day of the event, to greet people or sit with a candidate to facilitate the flow of conversation with constituents. If you would like to get involved, please contact Karen or Hattie.

What’s on The Ballot?

The League's local, nonpartisan election guide for the March 21, 2023 First Consolidated Government election is live at VOTE411.org with information on candidates in the Mayoral, City Council, and Property Appraiser races.

Please share these valuable resources with your friends and contacts!

Opportunities are coming!
Pretty soon our Nominating Committee members will be reaching out to inquire about League member's interest in serving on the board or chairing committees.  In recent years, our committee work has focused on Education, Natural Resources and Healthcare because these were committees our members were willing to lead and serve on.  If there is a topic of interest to members where no committee exists, we are happy to help you establish a committee or connect you to a state committee for involvement.  While it is not mandatory that we have local committees,  it allows our members to engage in and respond to local needs and issues.

Our League exists because there are members willing to do the work.  When the work ends, so does the League.

Want to meet in person? We do, too!

We are seeking out locations where we might be able to meet in person again but are having a difficult time finding a location that can accommodate 30 to 40 people for lunch or afternoons that provide reasonable prices.  If you’d like to help us, please contact Lanelle at lwvjaxfcc@gmail.com by March 15th.

We will form a short-term committee focused on identifying several options to choose from so we can get back to being together in the near future.

Education Committee
The Education Committee continues to meet by Zoom on the third Thursday of each month at 5 pm. Please contact Linda Mann at lmann971@gmail.com if you are interested in joining us. Our focus continues to be on responding to and educating the public on pending legislation during legislative session.

House Bill 1 and corresponding Senate Bill 202, which propose the all-out expansion of vouchers for education in the state of Florida,  are of high interest and the League strongly opposes both bills. The accompanying School Choice Brochure outlines the difference between public schools, charter schools, and private schools. There is also an estimated $4 billion dollar price tag to the state of Florida for this effort. Please ask your legislators to vote NO on this measure.

League of Women Voters of Jacksonville/First Coast Bylaws
Please take time to review our League's local bylaws. While our bylaws closely mirror those of our state and national boards, we offer our members the opportunity to review our bylaws each year and offer suggestions for change.  Submissions for change will be reviewed and considered by the board. All changes to our bylaws must be approved by members during the annual business meeting (anticipated to be held June 2023).  Submissions may only be made by members of League of Women Voters of Jacksonville/First Coast.

League of Women Voters Education Fund
LWVED is the sister organization to LWV that helps us cover the expenses of League’s important voter outreach and education mission. It can only be used for these purposes, and not for advocacy. Our Ed Fund is administered by LWVFL, but is separately allocated to LWVJFC. Because the Ed Fund is treated by the IRS as a 501(C)(3) organization, all donations to it are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. We have been using our Ed Fund this year to help us put on the Mayoral Candidate Meet and Greet we are holding on March 12, so we really need to restock the coffers.

To make a tax-deductible donation to the Ed Fund, you can send a check to LWVJFC, P.O. Box 330353, Atlantic Beach, FL 32233. The check should be made payable to LWVJFC Ed Fund.

The League of Women Voters of Florida has endorsed the Right to Clean and Healthy Waters petition and we will be gathering petitions in our four counties (Clay, Duval, Nassau and St Johns).  We only have until November 2023 to gather the mandatory minimum number of petitions (891,589) across the state.
