 The Voter
April 2022

President’s Message

Spring has sprung and so has League activity!

As we are enjoying better days of weather, our Voter Registration Director is seeking out opportunities for us to conduct voter registration drives. To support more events, we will need a good portion of our members to be qualified by participating in the Voter Registration training and quiz. If you have not already done so, please contact Dianne Main prior to the end of April for training and voter registration volunteer opportunities. There may be some changes to training after the ruling on SB90 litigation and as SB524 becomes law.

Several events will be taking place between now and September. We are reviewing our bylaws, preparing our budget and a slate of candidates for members to consider during our June 2022 annual business meeting. The following month, we will conduct a few membership meetings to develop our Local Program which will go before our members for vote in September. And, we’ll be conducting board orientation for our newest members, most likely in August.

And, while all this League business is taking place, I’ll be asking our members to contact your city councilpersons, commissioners, and Florida House and Senate representatives about topics that you care about. It’s important that prior to the 2022 elections and the 2023 legislative session, our current and future representatives have a firm idea about the needs and values of constituents. As you see candidates running for office, reach out to them and ask where they stand on issues that impact your community and the county or state. Don’t assume they know what matters to you or that they are aware of issues that exist.

Part of creating a more perfect democracy requires that every person participate whether that be attending public meetings, running for office, working on campaigns, supporting nonpartisan organizations, serving as poll workers, or educating ourselves about issues and possible solutions. I hope that each member will rededicate themselves to civic engagement, and if you are willing and able, consider serving on a local board, panel, or commission within your specific county.

Those who worked to see the 19th Amendment become law possessed no internet, email, or social media to conduct their long campaign to see women put in the Constitution. They stood on crates while giving speeches on street corners, rode on horseback over rough terrain to educate remote communities or to speak with elected representatives, gave speeches and educated passengers on trains crossing the country, wrote editorials, and met with elected members who would ultimately cast a vote in favor or opposition to women having the right to vote in our nation. While we have so much technology at our fingertips today, we must still have the personal will to speak out, engage our community, and do the work that began over 100 years ago.

If you are not sure how or where to start, feel free to contact me. I’m always happy to speak with a fellow League member.

— Lanelle Phillmon, LWVJFC President

News & Events

Who is ready to become a poll worker?

As our Supervisor of Elections offices begin to offer poll worker training for the 2022 elections, we hope that our members who are able and willing to serve in this capacity will do so. While each county’s criteria and eligibility may differ, we encourage you to review the poll worker information and training dates and sign up if you are able. The links to each county are listed below.

Clay County: www.clayelections.gov/Election-Workers-Volunteers/Become-an-Election-Worker

Duval County: www.duvalelections.com/Poll-Workers/Register-For-A-Class/Register-for-Training-Class

Nassau County: www.votenassaufl.gov/election-workers

St Johns County: www.votesjc.gov/

As soon as Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker has handed down his decision on SB90, we hope to move forward with tours of the Supervisor of Elections office for our members. We believe that the key to election integrity is community education and involvement.
